About the Council
A great place to live
Our urban centres are a vibrant mix of established towns and new young communities, with a diverse and growing population of around 160,000 residents. Rents are more affordable than those in neighbouring London boroughs Our population is diverse, with a mix of nationalities living across our towns and villages. Massive investment and growth is bringing new jobs and opportunities to the area. For shoppers, we have 3 huge malls within easy reach – Lakeside in Thurrock, Bluewater and Westfield Stratford.Green and pleasant land
Whilst London is directly on our eastern border, Thurrock itself is not as built-up. Behind our 18 miles of riverfront we have a varied green belt that covers 70% of the borough. Those who prefer unspoilt countryside will enjoy our 2 nature reserves – Rainham Marshes Nature Reserve and Thameside Nature Park – along with many other open parks and woodlands. Thurrock can offer you a great quality of life.Equality duty
Thurrock Council is committed to eradicating discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We are committed to agile working and welcome applications from those interested in flexible working. We strongly welcome applications from individuals that consider themselves to have a disability and individuals from black and minority ethnic groups as we recognise the positive benefits of a more diverse workforce at all levels. - commercial, entrepreneurial and connected public services.
Health & Wellbeing Strategy
Our health and wellbeing strategy is guided by a set of principles:
Reducing inequality in health and wellbeing We want things to get better for everyone but we are also committed to ensuring that the poorest communities enjoy the same levels of opportunity, health and wellbeing as the most affluent.
Prevention is better than cure Rather than waiting for people to need help, we want Thurrock to be a place where people stay well for as long as possible.
Empowering people and communities We don’t just want to do things to people, but give people the opportunity to find their own solutions and make healthy choices.
Connected services Good health and care services should be organised around the needs of people, not around the needs of organisations.
Our commitments will be delivered We will ensure that commitments are delivered and all partners are accountable.
Continually improving service delivery We will not settle for poor levels of service, continually striving to improve the planning and delivery of local services, ensuring that they meet the needs of the people of Thurrock.
Continuing to establish clear links between health and education services, improving accessibility for all We will make sure that clear links continue to be established between health and education services, improving accessibility.
